I used to use Quark and I ran distiller Digdre and even I could not tell you what Distiller does. Used to drive me nuts. You had to save your Quark file, export it as a pdf by fucking around with loads of settings under many various menu headers, preference panels, page set up pages and print pages, and then once you'd made the pdf you had to drag and drop it onto Adobe Distiller and it would noodle about a bit and then give you a locked up postscript file. Took about 6 days to get it done correctly as you'd always remember you didn't go to menu> Object> Output> Settings> EndRes> OutputParameters> File> Setprint> etc etc.
And then a day later the client would call with a copy change and you'd have to go all the way back to your Quark doc and do the whole lot again. I used to shout so much that flecks of blood would fly out of my throat onto the screen.

Cleaning blood flecks off of CRTs was the worst part.********
