Ive stayed in Edinburgh for about 7-8 years now, before that I stayed in Glasgow for a few years so have had a taste of both.

Personally I prefer Edinburgh for its much more cosmopolitan feel, always chocca with tourists and foreign voices.
Glasgow does have good shops, pubs, clubs and gig venues though.

Last year I went on a tour round Edinburgh Castle, impressive building - dont bother with the paid tours unless you like that sort of thing, just wander round yourself at your own pace.

Parliament is well worth doing too - impressive building.

If its a nice day then go for a wander up Arthurs Seat (beside parliament), and you'll get amazing views across edinburgh and towards fife.

Plenty of great places to Eat in Edinburgh.
Also worth firing down to Leith to have some food at the waterfront, you can watch the floaters drift by.

Edinburgh is a great city to just wander round and get lost in, especially with a camera.
The city centre is nice, george st with its posh shops, then theres the meadows (large park) for chilling (maybe TOO chilly for april), then theres all the big houses behind the meadows, marchmont, morningside etc - you could go find J K Rowlings house in Morningside.

The galleries are well worth seeing, especially the modern art ones if theres something good on. From these galleries you can wander from Dean down to Stockbridge via the waters of leith. Basically a river and a nice park that runs through the city centre.
Stockbridge is a nice area with its own community - like a little town - lots of specialist shops and some good restaurants n bars.
From here you can wander around the new town back up into the city centre.

That'd be my reccomendations actually, just plan some nice routes for walks and catch things along the way.
Great exercise too - Edinburgh is so hilly!!!
