Do some research and build your own.. The time invested is well worth the bundle saved.. Wait a little while for i7 chips to drop in price.. Build the best machine you can, then put whatever OS you please on it. With a little tinkering and some registry edits, Vista isn't half bad, but it's garbage on default settings. Vista x64 has been a lot more stable for me at home than OSX at work, but that's simply because I built my machine, customized the hell out of the settings, and didn't put any intrusive software like (the aforementioned)Norton on my machine (Virii do less damage than Norton software). Not a single crash in almost 4 years. Never buy a big manufacturer PC.
That being said, different Linux builds are getting better by the day. You can always setup a couple partitions and test out multiple OS's.. Each have their positives.
