Been to LA... much prefer it here in Australia. Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide are pretty relaxed. Melbourne has a lot of culture and great restaurants... Sydney isn't my kind of town, but if you don't mind life at a hectic pace and what I call "plastic" people then you might like it.
LA has, um, "plastic" people, crime, gangs, celebrities and smog.
Also, the economy is better here than in the US
