    One possibility:
Facebook seems like the middle of the road of everything right now. Can be relatively private and casual and free of bother if done right.
I think there will be a divide in that middle of the road. Those more dedicated to the online socializing world will gravitate toward networks that mutate and become closer to a Second Life type experience, and become even more deeply imbedded.
The middle will fade and be replaced by the next web thing, and the lightest users will find a very simple solution to accomodate their needs, essentially an enhanced email.

    Another possibility:
The next few years will see the maturing of a generation who have grown up with the concept of "open source" and will create a new breed of social networking, in which every individual has their own entirely unique social network. Like Ning, but far deeper, and completely customizable and open source. Open source programming and architecture will be old hat, and be the CSS of the future. If MySpace/Fcebook is the equivalent of having your own house or neighborhood online, this next wave will be the equivalent of having your own country or world.
