I read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell just before christmas. There's an interesting chapter about a study that was done at the university of michigan. It studied why the southern US states were more violent in general than the north. The study concluded that it wasn't anything to do with slavery, higher temperatures etc, it actually came from the cultural heritage of the first settlers there.
The settlers in the northern states were mainly farmers, how grew crops. But the settlers in the south came from a scottish-irish background and were mainly shepherds. As a farmer you don't have to worry about your crops, they just grow and you harvest them.
But shepherds have to constantly worry about other people stealing their sheep, watching the flock. In that culture you had to defend your animals with violence in order to be successful.
The study argued that the violence in the southern states even to this day stems from the cultural legacy of those first settlers.

You can read Outliers for a brief synopsis, but the authors of the study published a book called Culture of Honor:

I wonder if the attitude towards violence is a cultural thing in the middle east that can be attributed to differing ideologies but also to a deeper rooted cultural legacy.
