I have a 24-70L and its great, but its great becuase its good when you cannot control your environment such as at events etc. Its a brilliant range on a full frame camera like a 5d/1ds but on a 40D its not going to be wide enough to make a good all round walk around lens.

I would work out what it is you want to focus on.
    Portraits? then buy the 85L, 135L, 200L or 70-200L.
    Weddings? 24-70L, 50mm L, 70-200L
    Product shots? 60mm f2.8 Macro, 100mm f2.8 Macro
    Landscape stitching? 50mmL
    Interiors/enclosed areas and landscapes? 10-22mm

buying a good all rounder is going to be hard with a 40D, your 17-85 is probably pretty decent for this. If you purely want to look like a pro and wear out your arms? get the 24-70L, its a beast.

There is a lens for every situation but you should put a lot of thought into your lighting, lighting is key.
