    The most important aim of the teaching concept of the Merz Akademie is to train students of design to work as independent media authors who are aware of aesthetic, cultural and scientific relations in their work and are therefore committed to a critical analysis.

    A society whose reality is influenced more and more strongly by the media needs designers who can provide orientation and guidance. It also requires practical skills to communicate specific messages effectively and appropriately as well as to exploit and develop technological potential efficiently and effectively. The analysis of current social processes and consideration of possible developments form the basis of the socially responsible behaviour of future generations of media designers. This is why such issues have long been an integral part of study programmes at the government-approved Merz Akademie, which was founded in 1918.

    "Film and Video", "New Media" and "Visual Communication" are the main elements of the seven-semester long bachelor programme in "Art, Design and Media" which concentrates on the creative/conceptual application of new media technologies in cultural, social and scientific fields.

    A comprehensive range of state-of-the-art technical equipment from the fields of photography, printing, computer laboratories, sound processing, video editing and even 3-D-Blue-Screen-Studio is available to students. The Merz Akademie regularly addresses the public through projects, exhibitions, conferences and its publishing partnership merz & solitude, thus influencing extracurricular cultural life.
