Evolutionarily, it may be that it is advantageous to have a section of a society who do something other than child-rearing, and maybe spend their time exploring the arts, or just dancing til 6am on a weekday in a sweaty club with their tops off, before showering together then going to work while the rest of the population struggles to get cereal into little kids mouths and driving them across town in car-seats.
