In a perfect world, MOST of the design we see in our world is unneccessary, but we tend to take for granted designs that save lives or drastically improve it, like subway signage that is clear and understandable even if you don't speak the language, or well laid out control panels for cars, planes, etc. that can prevent human errors. Design ain't just about beauty or hype. I think there are too many advert designers on here, me included.
