there is a mod chip that you can turn off. you need that one if you're going to try to use xbox live, otherwise you'll be banned from the service if they detect it. you also dont want to put a new HD in if you're going to use xbox live.
AND you will need original copies of xbox live titles if you want to play them online, unless you use xboxconnect or gamespy arcade.
the xbox mod is really easy to install, solderless.
