oral history:
Mother was called Pat Tempest. Father brought up in Bradford, started off in wool trade, then had to go to war. Met wife in the library in Bradford; he had been gassed in the war, also a terrible time being buried, but wouldn't talk about that. He got over the gas part, but took a long time to get over the burying experience, eg wouldn't go bathing with the children. Father read history at Cambridge, then married and came to London to live, got a flat in Walham Green, had very little money. SG's stepmother was horrified to 'inherit' these two little girls with strong Yorkshire accents. After her father's second marriage, the family lived in Church Hamborough in Oxfordshire for a while, in a rented farmhouse. SG, aged three at the time, remembers being met at the station by a pony and trap.
