I guess it comes down to the question of whether you agree, or are willing to adapt your point of view to his. If his beliefs are very strong, as you say, and are based in religion - don't expect him to compromise much.
Religion is fundamentally irrational and a very personal matter, so I'm guessing there won't be too much space for debate, if you have different stances about certain things. This would be the case with many religions, not only Islam.
