Most recuriting companys suck. Yes if you are out of work and willing to do ANYTHING to keep the lights on, they come in handy. If you are pretty established in the industry, have a great book, and know what you want to be doing they suck. You can almost tell when an recruiter is posting a job for an agency rather than the agency itself. The recruiter job post is like:

    Web Designer:
-We are looking for a really sharp web designer to create compelling online creative. Candidate must have expert knowledge in photoshop, illustrator, quark, indesign, premiere, after effects, HTML, CSS, Javascript, Actionscript, PHP, Cold Fusion, Ajax, DHTML, COBOL, FORTRAN, C#. Candidate must be able to hand code in numerous programming languages without the use of a WYSIWYG and handle the dynamic updates and maintenance of our other sites.

This is a highly creative opportunity!

Then you have one posted by a real agency:
    -Interactive Art Director
We are looking for a seasoned art director that is capable of using thier creative talents to understand brands, creative briefs and create ground breaking experiences in the online space. You will be working hand in hand with multimedia developers, web developers, your creative director and writers to find new and innovative ways to communicate our client's brands to the masses. Candidate must have a portfoilio that speaks for itself. Expert knowledge of photoshop, illustrator, and have a strong understanding of how multimedia and web developers use flash and other programming languages to help bring your creative ideas to life.

Now if you are an art director wanting to work in the online space, which one sounds more appealing to you? Most recuriters dont even really know the difference between an interactive art director and a "web designer" (as the call it). They google the latest skillets, throw them all in one bucket and hope something sticks.
