If I were going to get a pc this month, which I might do, I would go with a core 2 quad Q8200. It's not the latest and greatest but it's still fast as hell and it's like $190(us). People are overclocking it pretty easily too, if you're into that at all. If you have more cash to spend then I would jump up to the i7 940. It's ridiculously fast and easily overclockable. From what I understand with GPU's you'll be good with a high end ati or nvidia card. You don't really need to go multi with them for design unless you're looking to run crysis at 60 fps. If you're doing any kind of 3D then you might want to go with the FireGL's. The word is they're outperforming NVIDIA cards in "real world" use.
