Hey chief, not sure about the masks, but it can help the blend to add a wee bit of noise to help stop it banding, though on a black it should be ok. If you do need to add noise, you're right in doing a small amount, I usually do 2-4 at 300dpi, any more than that makes the whole thing far too grainy.
