get a new domain and host. start anew.
just had to do this for my own client. old designer registered domain and host for my client. years later my client asks me to do a new design/take over web mastering. a year later their site and ftp access disappears and old designer isn't answering phone calls.
i just started fresh with a better domain and hosting that i control. but this time i made sure my client know EVERY detail about the ownership of the domain and hosting plan. that's the best you can do for your client. help them understand what they are dealing with.
