imo, you won't really get the best results from an automated process - ekeing out a good result requires fiddling, focus and the use of lots of hints and details. Try making up two gradient sets - one for a brighter foreground, the other slightly darker and muddier for depth or background details. Employ small white or very light yellow feather brushes at light spots.
