shades don't work me either!
try using subtle radial gradients to suggest highlights on her face.. problem is lighting is bad on the origininal shot so it mite be diff to correct that now..nice colours.. not sure about the background tho..
tip for doing faces: eyes the areas around the eyes, mouth, head shape and positioning are the most important!!
