^ Oh God, my parents at NO TIME EVER ever managed to get me that amazing surprise exciting gift and the circumstances of that were so difficult that I always always forced myself to show them how much I loved the 'alternative' version they had got for me instead...

    - Millenium Falcon. I really really wanted a Millenium Falcon more than anything in the world. That Christmas, a giant Millenium Falcon sized box appeared under the tree and I floated on a cloud of delirious trippy excitement right up to the day when I unwrapped it and discovered that they'd seen "another large plastic space toy in Woolworths, only this one was much better becuase the front comes off and the little man inside comes out".

    - The year I wanted a Raleigh Ultra Burner and a Raleigh Ultra Burner sized box appeared in the garage but then turned out to be a "BMX Style Bike called a *Scorcher* from Woolworths, which was just as good as an Ultra Burner, in my Dad's opinion, if not better.. and it was only £35.00" as opposed to £140.00 which he couldn't afford.

Heartbreaking on the inside. Especially as I knew that by doing the right thing and showing them how grateful and pleased I was, I was condoning similar acts of thrifty smartness in years to come.

    • I was mocked for years for rising a *Scorcher* despite tricking it out with expensive components funded by my saturday job.SkyPoo

    • and they wanted us to feel more comfortable. We used to put on Christmas plays for them every year. Gifts didn't matter, and thereJaline
    • there was a limit on the amount you could spend on them, which I enjoyed. Not as much pressure.Jaline
    • Christmas recitals were included. We incorporated the piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, etc. Parents = audience.Jaline
    • Well, the year before i got nothing but a sweater and a pile of socks and I cried for a whole day...Greedo
    • my parents couldn't afford shit either, but i didn't have your sense and sensibility...Greedo
    • heh. We really didn't care about the presents. That's one thing I should figure out how to do from my parents...Jaline
    • When my mom got a present wrong once, I actually just felt bad for her and for making her feel bad about getting it wrong.Jaline
