If i am not mistaken, MT gives free web hosting to most of the design sites you're referring to. Acta Divina does the same. Acta Divina approached me to host The Firm List for free, but I was happy with Dreamhost.
Tried ThinkHost when they started out, but moved all those sites to DreamHost.
Rackspace was cool, but your own server involves some experience/time managing the aspects of your server.
