When my mom was little, she'd visit her great aunt and uncle's farm with her brothers and sisters. Sophie and George were older at that point, didn't have kids. Her uncle was a big man- about 6'3. He was kind, and quiet.
At night he would sit in the room upstairs that look out on the fields, and smoke his cigar. Her aunt didn't like the smell of his cigars in the house, but would just shake her head, smile, and open the window for him.
Time passed, and after Sophie and George died, and all of the kids grew up, and new family bought the farm. The new family kept in contact with mom's family after buying the house- showing them updates and new editions to the place.
About 10 years ago, my aunts and my mom took a trip to their old home, and out to the farmhouse- a little tour of their childhoods. The family that lived there had a young son who liked to play in the room upstairs where Uncle George used to sit and smoke his cigar. They all got to talking, and the mother told them that her son recently started opening the upstairs window. Since it was the middle of winter- she asked him why he would even think of opening the window- allowing the freezing air in. He told her that the nice old man had asked him to open the window once in a while to let the smoke smell out.
