And then when I started doing Capoeira, the brazillian martial art thang, well, you get a nickname from that officially. It's part of the whole thing. In fact their are about 20 people who I know fairly well who I know only by their capoeira nickname...anyway...it's usually given to you by your master and usually it's pretty funny...my teacher tried a few out on me and nothing stuck until one day after class I was milling around with some other students and my teachers friend looked at me and said "Professor Pardal!" - and in Brazil "Professor Pardal" is what they called I think Gizmo Duck from the Duck Tales cartoon...because I had this funky hair style and was wearing the professor glasses. So that kinda stuck. It got shortened to just "Pardal" ("professor" being an actual honorific title in the art that I wa nowhere near). Means "sparrow" in english. But since I have been in capoeira circles since about '95 in nyc there are people all the time that walk up to me and go "Pardal!" because they don't even know my real name.. I kinda like it..it feels like my real other name at this point...
