i was 28 when i proposed and we got married a little less than a year later. A friend of mine had proposed to his girl earlier that same year, and he had taken her up to Montreal for the weekend at a fancy hotel and everything, so felt like the pressure was on.
i anguished about it for a while and then inspiration struck. i went to a used book store and bought an old Oxford English dictionary. Then i glued enough of the back pages together that it would be the height of the ring box, and cut out a space for it. Then across the course of a few pages, which i bookmarked with ribbons, i told a brief version of our story together in fairy tale fashion. The last bookmark was the ring box. On the front and spine i scraped off the Oxford title and stenciled on "You & Me" (yes, i know, corny).
i decided to give it to her at our favorite fancy Italian restaurant. So after we had eaten the main course i went out to the car and got the book. i had told her i had something for her and she later told me she was pretty sure i was going to propose, but when she saw the book, she was all disappointed. So she turns to the page with the ring box, i take it out and start proposing. In the middle of it, our waiter walks to our table, and not realizing what was going on, starts to ask us about dessert. He looks down and goes "Oh shit" and hurriedly walks away. He came back very apologetic and with a couple glasses of free champagne.
She, of course, still has the book (though the ring is lost somewhere in our house).
