To get into Advertising, I created a huge life size cardboard cut-out of myself holding a sign that said "Will work for work." Had my resume written underneath that along with a CD of my work in my 2D pants pocket.
The Thing cost me $250 of which I made three of them. I sent them to my top choices and viola! It worked.
May seem a bit over the top, but now that I'm an Art Director, I usually throw out all my promo mailers sent to me. My garbage could never fit something 5'8".
