Fear in Cape Fear

One not-so-nice Christian lady, Ms. Diane Fanning, kept yelling, “Socialist, Socialist... Get out of here!” at United States Senator Barack Obama as he made a pit stop for food and votes at “Cape Fear BBQ & Chicken” in North Carolina, Sunday. “At least he’s not a warmonger!” another diner, Cecilia Hayslip, 61, reportedly yelled back at Ms. Fanning.
Obama was given a mixed greeting at the restaurant, some diners applauded his arrival, while others, such as Ms. Fanning of the local First Presbyterian Church, who along with some other church-goers had gathered at the restaurant after services, were quite hostile. Senator Obama offered to shake hands with Ms. Fanning, but she refused, and later told reporters “I still think he’s a closet Muslim.” (Source) Referring to the warmer reception Obama got from other diners, Ms. Fanning added, “some of ‘em are just nicer than I am.”
While Ms. Fanning is no fan of Obama’s he was greeted much more warmly by 76 year old Betty Waylett, who told the senator “you’re doing a great job!” With the notable exception of Ms. Fanning, Senator Obama seemed to do well with the remainder of the diners including the pastor, Randall Bremer who told reporters, “I’m very impressed by his ability to meet people on a down-to-earth level.”
