If you think about it, the demand for originally is mainly a 20th/ 21rst century phenomenon. Old style artists didn't worry about creating "original" work, they were more concerned with technical ability and adhering to what the culture/ religion demanded of them. The rise of modern art launched the idea that culture and art needed to innovate and constantly progress. So when you dream about the "good old days" when everyone was original, you need to put it in perspective a bit. In many ways, there is more originality now than ever before.
