In all honesty, the "logo" the friend designed isn't much better or worse then the "logos" you designed... none of them are logos. Just because yours is vector-based artwork doesn't make it a logo. Sounds like a case of a bruised ego to me. Just run with whatever the client says, and get your ego out of the way. If the website looks like shite after you've integrated the friend's logo- that's on you.
