I have never seen 5, at least I don't think so...
but if it's for sport fans, chavs and the likes, then this new one is spot on.. It lacks poetry, sincerity and any sense of imagination...
As a designer, if I was given the old logo and asked to create a campaign around it, it would give me endless opportunity and would never conflict with anything.. it's proportions lent itself to any context [print, web, motion] and whether we like it or not, these are major considerations...
The new logo on the other hand will dominate and dictate form language and to me, that's not what a logo is meant to do.. it is simply an identifier... expecting and wanting a communication vehicle out of logo is a ridiculously outdated notion which only leads to utterly contrived creations..
let the branding communicate the message, let the logo simply state who the message is from...
