^ The appearance of stitching is not enough to garantee its a welted sole... look also for a 'ply' effect on the edge of the sole where the upper meets a gasket, and underlay and then the sole unit. If its a traditional formal shoe welt the stitching will be evident in a recessed channel around the edge of the sole leather, if its a more contemporary welt this may be covered by an additional skin that is welded to the sole.
Beware of cup soles that have been molded with real stiching in them!
