"What to look for- Bench made shoes aren't cheap, but neither is buying a pair of crappy shoes every six months and looking like a slob with no taste, so expect to spend $400 +. Great English shoes are usually found in Northampton, with brands like Church, Cheaney, Barker, Trickers, Edward Green, Crockett & Jones, Peal & Co., George Cleverley and Alfred Sargeant all making good stuff. If you find cordovan and you can afford it, either buy it or call me and tell me where. Cordovan is leather from a horse's arse, and it is as tough as, well, a horse's arse. Good Year welting is usually marked as so, but if in doubt, look for the row of stitching running around the welt."
