I know this might be an unpopular response, but I say the Corolla. Toyota's reliability record, in my opinion, is second to none--and Consumer Reports seems to consistently agree. I have a number of friends who have seen 150k-250k miles with their Toyotas. The Jetta is a good way to spend a lot of money at purchase and years from now, although they look great. If you're looking to purchase a car and drive it for 10+ years, the Corolla will work out fine.
