    For making a pile of wall (not worth much money) into something of great value.

    That is the great 'trick' of art (and indeed graphics/design etc.). How do you get you client to buy your work? - You take something which has no value - i.e a blank canvas and you 'give it value' by putting 'your mark' on it. Then it is worth something to someone.

    How much your work is worth depends on how much value is attached to it.
