depends on the user and rest of the site i guess. for example, if i wanted to check out your work and just get some information from your site quickly, it gets really annoying for me if i have to figure out how to use your site. i'd rather spend that time checking out your portfolio or something.
However, sometimes that function is very useful and makes sense in the context, i.e. a game.
just my two bucks.
