I think the reason he did this was because the barriers came down behind his rig if you watch it, and he probably couldn't judge from the cab if he was too close to the track so he decided to make a run for it. From our vantage point it was obvious he was okay where her was, but right up there, set back behind the engine housing like that, he probably though he was in the way.
