Just got back from my court appearance regarding putting my rubbish out on the wrong day. Shit happened almost a year ago and I've long since forgotten what actually happened, so my approach was to just plead guilty and hopefully pay the original fine of 60€...
Overall it was a very exciting and quite pleasurable experience, everyone was just so nice...
So if you find yourself living in Amsterdam and looking to get out of the office for a couple hours on a weekday afternoon, I'd recommend civil court. Make sure you mention you need a court approved translator though, if you don't happen to speak Nederlands..

- How can I violate a law I don't know about, I asked, there being no signs?********
- Too bad they replied the laws are just your ignorance of them is no defense. Pay late fee penalty.********
- My tags identified the car as a rental. They automatically took the fine ($150) from my credit card on file with car rental company. There was nothing I could do.********
