many design mags/mailinglists/media/sites here are loaded with "DUTCH DESIGN this" DUTCH DESIGN that.." Even if there's a fair abroad you get a letter in the mail only about the dutch designers and where to find them, not about foreign designers. Holland is extremely introspective imho. Not looking outward.. This whole DUTCH DESIGN thing has for a long time been financed heavily by the natnl. govt. and it seems to WORK! But there's only a handful shops doing really interesting work, while i can find so many more abroad. Interaction design (web in particular) is quite disappointing here compared to what happens at agencies in for instance the US and to some extent the UK. Also because most clients here aren't really as big on budget as some are in the US for instance. Also, quite a fair share of the really interesting alternative graphic design here is also funded by various culture/artfunds. There's not so much to make here, i think in the UK/US designers earn a bit better. And mind you, the rent here is high. Especially in Amsterdam, it is friggin' expensive!!!
