Georgia will introduce a new currency next week to oust the Russian ruble, and officials promised to hold it steady for the next three years. The currency, called the lari, will begin to circulate in the former Soviet republic on Monday, replacing a coupon that has struggled to compete with the ruble.
Coupons, in use for the last 18 months, can be swapped for lari for one week at a rate of 1 million coupons a lari, giving the lari an initial exchange rate of 1.3 lari to the dollar.
The central bank chairman, Nodar Dzhavakhishvili, said he was confident that the lari, which is backed by $52 million from the International Monetary Fund currency stabilization fund, would hold its value.
