what is the secret to Illustrator's Free Transform tool distort?

I gave up on it some time ago. Using Object > Envelope Distort satisfies my distortion needs. Except some rare cases when I have to open up FreeHand 9 and remember how to get Illy files in and out of it. But I avoid that at all costs.
