A big part of the problem IMO is that the press has bought into this idea that they need to be "balanced" and present "both sides of the story" all the time, EVEN if one side is lying through their teeth.
So the Republicans can get away with shamelessly lying, and it comes down to a question of who you can "identify" with more, instead of who has the better policies.
