"Oriental" is a term which has negative connotations for many Asian Americans because it reflects European and American colonialistic attitudes of the past and present"
Negative connotations? never heard of that, reflects european and american colonialistic attitudes? what exactly do you mean by that? never heard of that either.
I can tell you that might be valid somewhere in america (where im living currently) but every other country that I been before , icnluding sao paulo, brasil (largest population of japanese people next to japan) lots of countries in southamerica and madrid and saragoza spain, it more common to use the GEOGRAPGIC term Oriental, than asian.
Be carefull since english culture or language is not the only one in the world. I can understand that in america they use it, (I been living for 2 years now), never have any complaints by using the term oriental, or orient, because its reffers to the geografic location on the other side of the hemisphere, not to the actual people.
