there's a lot of "blame the media" talking going on in the blogs and whatnot, and i agree to the extent of the broadcast media. the spin that happens on television is irresponsible journalism, especially for the outlet that has overtaken print & online. if you actually read newspapers or news online, the spin is relatively minimal and the breadth of stories covered is wider.

however with the necessity to fill 24 hours a day with "news," and the lack of both domestic & foreign bureaus to be covering events other than those in the national spotlight, the pundits on TV must re-hash talking points for a majority of their airtime. this works incredibly to the advantage of the republicans, as while all politicians repeat themselves, they're the ones who talk in terms of gossip and hearsay as opposed to policy and agendas (which is far more 'boring' to listen to on a form of entertainment). it's both a fault of the system and a fault of the user for not holding themselves accountable and being more responsible in seeking out information that will impact their lives.

    • also, the closer the race is, the more people will watch CNN. so that's to their advantage, as well.colin_s
