TF, i've seen interviews of both of them mentioning that Depp stayed in his basement for about 3 months.
Hunter was commenting on how annoying it was to have some guy imitating him al lthe time.
I think Depp did an incredible job. There's a couple points in the his Pirate flic that you could see Hunter peeking through Depp's character as well.
