I went to the eye doctor last month and he explained it to me this way.
When your vision is not 20/20 the muscles around your eyes are constantly squeezing your eyes to produce a sharp image. Hence why things appear sharper when you squint. This over time causes fatigue and adds to the problem. Using glasses reduces this strain on muscles and the eye itself. While using glasses your eyes will change much less than if your were wearing no glasses at all.
