I think if they're slightly out, you'll do more bad than good by having them. This is based on experience:
My Mum was told the same, chose not to get glasses and went 20 years without really needing them.
My Girlfriend was told the same, chose to get glasses and quickly came to rely on them.
The eye is controlled by loads of muscles - glasses makes it easier and the muscles get a bit lazy, I think:
Also, keep in mind the optician gave you a free eye test and will only make money when he sells you something. Glasses are bloody expensive.
