All the negative things you hear from Mexico are in a way myths or simply exaggerated. Water problems? I never had problems in the 2 decades I lived there. Don't wanna get mugged? Act normal. period.
It depends a lot on your level of acceptance for different things. I've known a lot of people that visit Japan and only come back with complaints about how it's impossible to live there coz they speak no English, or coz they are very serious, or coz it feels so claustrophobic and cold... But I've been there and loved it and could spend the rest of my life there.
