Also, read as - we are one of their biggest customers, who in the mid- to long- term they have more to gain by keeping us on-side as a counter-weight to the American and Chinese powers.
Your friend was right in that they want to regain their prestige - for which they have every right to, but same could be said of the EU.
Russia is bad-ass and distinctly foreign in their outlook - but it will be our re/actions that dictate whether we enter another period of 'cold war'-like tension.
We've known since the fall of the Iron Curtain that we'd be entering a multi-polar world - and, unsettling as it might be, it's in all our interests to have it so.
