I'm not sure about their sponsored hosting. I think they may do it for high-profile sites (like re_invigorate) to push their names out to designers and developers.
At the end of the day you're asking for a large, expensive service and you're only going to get it for free if the suppplier is going to get something in exchange for hosting you. Whether that's kudos or cash is pretty much irrelevant.
