    It's hard to be the one to open up, especially when you're feeling attacked. If you can muscle through the initial reaction of close-mindedness and stay in a calm, logical, but open place, the sgitator (your mom) will often see that your actions are what is dictating the conversation, not their rants, and will calm down a bit and some logic will filter though.
    i have to do this with my wife from time to time, as she is also an emotional person (whereas i'm logical). At first opening those difficult dialogues feels like you're asking someone to shoot you in the chest, but once the rage on their part subsides, good things can come of it
