I'm guessing its more complicated than the diagram you've posted, but for the record, to get rid of the jags on an image like that circle (assuming ts not possible to just re-draw the circle) I would do a series of low impact soft gaussian blurs on it, then using either levels or brightness/contrast to re-establish the harder edges.

Doing it that way takes a bit of patience becuase if you lurch straight into one single harsh gaussian blur you'll lose the integrity of the shape, so it has to be maybe ten or more blurs at a few pixels maximum, intersperced with correcting contrast adjustments.

Obviously that doesn;t work with anything that contains tone or textured detail, which was why I asked if I could see the article.

    • I usually set up an action and just do it automatically until it looks good.Koopsy
    • Knowing your work anyway IC, I'm guessing you'd already know this method of correcting Jags.Koopsy
    • yes thanks. i have me all those actions. but real anti-aliasing a very complicated process.invisiblechamber
    • i wonder how this old software did it easily but photoshop can't.invisiblechamber
